Getting Started

Add and manage subscriptions

What to enter for amount and currency, billing cycle, First Billing Date, trials, and reminder days, and how to pause, cancel, delete, and find subscriptions.

In Mili, each subscription is a single record: how much it costs, how often you’re charged, and when the charges start. Fill in those three things, and Mili can work out every charge to come.

Add a subscription

  • Choose File > Add Subscription…, press ⌘N, or click the + button at the bottom of the sidebar.
  • To add several at once, choose File > Add from Popular Services… (⇧⌘N), or click Popular Services at the bottom of the sidebar. Services are organized by category, and you can search by name, pinyin, or abbreviation.

Fill in the details

The editor has five sections: Service, Price, Billing Cycle, Category & Status, and Notes & Tags.

Service

  • Name: As you type, Mili suggests services from its built-in library. Choose a suggestion, and the icon, brand color, and category are filled in automatically. If you haven’t entered an amount yet, the typical price, currency, and billing cycle are filled in too.
  • Plan: Optional — for example, Premium or Family.
  • Website domain: Mili uses this to get the service’s icon — for example, netflix.com.
  • Icon: Click the icon in the top-left corner of the editor to replace it with your own image. To switch back to the icon Mili fetches automatically, click Use Automatic.

Price

  • Amount and currency: Enter the amount in the currency you actually pay in. If that’s different from your base currency, the converted amount appears below.
  • Payment method: Choose from 11 options, including Alipay, WeChat Pay, Credit Card, Apple Pay, and App Store.

Billing Cycle

  • Pick a common cycle with one click: Monthly, Quarterly, Every 6 Months, Yearly, Weekly, or One-Time.
  • For anything else, set a custom cycle of every N days, weeks, months, or years — for example, every 2 weeks or every 3 months.
  • First Billing Date: The date of the first charge. Mili uses it to work out the next charge date, which appears just below. For one-time purchases, this field is called Payment Date.
  • Auto-Renew: When it’s off, you won’t get any more reminders for this subscription and it won’t appear in Upcoming. Charges that have already happened still count toward your totals.

Category & Status

  • Category: Choose from 17 categories, such as Video & TV, Music, AI Services, Productivity, and Cloud & Storage. Categories are used to calculate Share by Category.
  • Status: Active, Trial, Paused, or Canceled. If you choose Trial, you can enter a Trial End Date. If you choose Canceled, you can enter a Cancellation Date.
  • Remind in Advance: How many days before a charge to remind you, from 0 to 30. Choose 0 to be reminded on the day of the charge.

Notes & Tags

Save a link for managing the subscription, and add tags and notes. Tags and notes are both searchable.

Track a free trial

Set the status to Trial, then choose a Trial End Date. Starting 7 days before the trial ends, Subscription Review in Overview lists it, reminding you to decide whether to keep it or cancel.

During the trial, Mili projects charges only up to the Trial End Date. Once the trial turns into a paid subscription, change the status back to Active, and future charges and reminders pick up from there.

Pause, cancel, or delete

In Subscriptions, Control-click a subscription:

  • Pause Subscription: For memberships you’re not using for a while. A paused subscription no longer counts toward future spending, and you won’t get reminders for it. To resume it, Control-click it and choose Mark as Active.
  • Mark as Canceled: For services you’ve already unsubscribed from. The Cancellation Date is set to today, and the name appears with a strikethrough. Canceled subscriptions are hidden from the list by default; you can find them under Inactive in the sidebar. To always show them, turn on Show Canceled Subscriptions in List in Settings.
  • Delete: Permanently deletes the record. This can’t be undone. If iCloud Sync is on, the subscription is also deleted on your other devices.

Tip

After you unsubscribe from something, mark it as canceled instead of deleting it. That way, its past spending stays in your Annual Statement, and you’ll have a record to look back on.

Find subscriptions

  • Search: In Subscriptions, press ⌘F to search by name, plan, notes, category, tags, or domain.
  • Sort: Sort by Next Charge, Annual Cost, Name, Date Added, or Category.
  • Filter: Use the Sort & Filter menu in the toolbar to filter by status. To see just one category, click it under Categories in the sidebar.
  • Duplicate: To add a similar subscription — another account for the same service, for example — Control-click a subscription and choose Duplicate.
